Google SEO and Building Natural Links

We are often reminded by Google that natural, editorial type links are much better for enhancing our ability to rank high in the Google search results. On the other hand it can be extremely difficult to get these naturally awarded links especially if you have a brand new site and you can only build content at a slow pace.

Google’s original patent describing how Google will crawl and index the link structure is loosely based on the academic world where references are given to unique or controversial research, each reference says something about the quality of the paper in question, the more the better.

Google works a lot like this, the more pages that reference your site the better quality of information can be expected to be found there. The problem comes when we are first starting out, we may have unique quality content but no one is going to come and see it without a link to it, this link will have to be manufactured, not natural so there’s no other way around it.

In this article I want to go through some of the aspects that make a site’s link profile look more natural than not and the first place I want to start off with is ‘deep linking’. If your site is truly a quality resource it is going to have links to multiple areas of it not just the home page. Building links to deeper pages will ensure you keep a healthier looking link profile and aid your pages in being indexed.

Reciprocal links despite Google’s acknowledgement of their low value are still widely used. Why do you think Google put’s such a low weight on reciprocal links? It is because 90% of them are manufactured based on an agreement rather than awarded simply on the basis of great quality. My advice would be to simply use them sparingly.

Natural links do not hit your site all at once, they will build up naturally overtime, as your domain gains age it will naturally pick up more links as your work is referenced progressively. If you get involve in paid links or spamming your link graph will show huge spikes, this sort of activity is bound to be recognised and penalised accordingly.

Natural links will point to your site from more than one domain or even ten domains for that matter. You should always be looking to increase domain diversity in order to increase your rankings. Don’t simply concentrate on getting links from one or two particular sites because it’s easier, rather go to as many different places as possible to gather links.

3 Google Local Search Tips to Get to the Top

When you’re in business for yourself, you’re constantly looking for new ways to let people know you exist and what services or products you provide. With the mobile lifestyles we lead today and our reliance on internet searches to research the things we buy (even locally), being found in the search engines is an absolute must. And being found in Google in particular is especially critical.

As a small business owner or entrepreneur, you often have to do this all yourself as well. Unlike larger businesses, you probably don’t have employees to dedicate to search engine or online marketing. So by learning these 3 Google local search customization tips, you’ll put your business on the map in Google and put yourself ahead of your local competition.

Getting Started in Google Local Search

The first thing to understand about local search is that it’s a completely different game than normal search engine optimization (SEO). The success of your local search efforts depends on three things.

1. Proper keyword selection

2. Proper setup in Google’s Local Business Center (now called Google Places)

3. Gaining citations from major data providers

Proper Keyword Selection

Choosing proper keywords to optimize and compete for is absolutely essential in any SEO effort. But in local search, you have to remember who your customers are and why they buy from you. Always keep these factors in mind as you select keywords. Your goal is to anticipate what your customers will type into the Google search bar when they’re looking for your service or products.

The best way to figure this out is often to ask your current customers how they found you and what they would search for in Google if they were searching for your products or services. You can also use the Google external keyword tool to develop ideas, but most local search volumes are so low it’s hard to choose the best ones.

Finally, when you’re selecting keywords for Google local search campaigns, it’s best to focus your efforts on smaller groups of people (called niches in the online marketing industry). For example, rather than focusing on trying to draw people to your tire shop, focus your local search campaign around your most profitable repair…like a tie rod replacement or front end alignment. After all, most people will search for what they need done, not the type of business they need.

Proper Setup in Google Places

When it comes to setting your company up in Google Places, the most important thing is to simply get it done. Don’t procrastinate.

If your business name doesn’t include a city name or tell people what you actually do, you should include that when you enter it. For example, rather than ABC Enterprises, you should put something like ABC Enterprises – Oklahoma City’s Premier Office Supply Store.

When choosing the categories, you should put your keyword thinking cap on again. By the examples Google gives in their local search setup screen, it seems they want you to choose broad categories. But this is a poor strategy! You should be specific. Rather than saying you’re a dentist, say you’re a pediatric orthodontist for example.

Finally, make sure you list a local phone number rather than a toll free (800, 866, 888) number. This is one of the primary tools Google uses to cross reference local search results. So by having a true local phone number, it helps prove you’re actually located in the same city as the searcher.

Citations from Major Data Providers

You should think of citations in local search like backlinks in traditional search engine optimization. Except you can’t really go out and get citations…Google finds them on their own. A citation is just a reference on the internet to your business. The reference often includes your name, address, phone number, and possibly your products or services.

What you should do is go to the major data providers like Yellow Pages online and Yelp and make sure all your information is correct and listed the same way you have it at Google. Then, when the local search spiders find the information, it will corroborate what you put in the local business center, which will help raise your standings in the search results.

The Importance of On-Page Site Links in Google SEO Results

On-Site content links have quickly become an important part of any good Google SEO effort. Not all links are created equal in that we have derived a link strategy that has proven very successful in our SEO results. Go through each page’s content and find the keywords that best match the keywords used in other pages within your website.

Don’t rush through the process, as taking the time to properly use all of the attributes will give your SEO efforts a lift. Make sure to include a title attribute in each HTML link which should match the landing page’s file name, keywords and content.

Ideally if your web site is about apples, and in the content you create a link to one of your pages about red apples, make sure the page that the link points to is called red-apples.HTML, php or asp, and that the keywords and content of that page are also about red apples. Don’t forget to include in the title attribute of the link a useful description about the landing page’s topic. An example link from one page to the other could be as follows.

Keeping all of the elements in line tells a search engine more-so than a visitor that the link refers to a page about red apples. Just remember that most web developers who even declare the title attribute tend to undercut their power by not focusing it properly.

A focused on-page link can boost both the overall web site’s relevance value and the destination page. Don’t rush and take your time creating a few good links to other pages on your site. This strategy work well in conjunction with your regular navigation links but should not be your main navigational page strategy. A good navigational menu goes a long way along with on-page links.
